Digital health technologies and patient decision aids

Many patient decision aids are developed with the aim of helping patients to clarify and communicate what matters to them (i.e., their subjective values and preferences) in relation to medical choices at hand. Patients can use these aids to prepare and participate in Shared Decision Making with health care professionals.

Digital health technologies present a range of opportunities for creating new ways to advance the design, adoption, usage and evaluation of patient decision aids. However, there is a dearth of systematic research on the use of digital health technologies in this field of decision support. The research conducted by the Mind-the-Patient Network focusses on developing digital innovations and incorporating these in patient decision aids, with a view to enhancing their deployment and usefulness for patients.
